Galvanic corrosion: also known as contact corrosion or bimetallic corrosion.
Definition: after the metal itself is corroded and dissolved in the electrolyte solution, it is recontacted or electrically connected with the metal with higher self-corroding potential, thus accelerating the corrosion rate. Galvanic corrosion is a kind of ubiquitous and extremely harmful corrosion formation, which widely exists in oil, natural gas, shipping, aviation and construction industries and other industries.
Principle of galvanic corrosion:
When two or more different metals come into contact in the conductive medium, the corrosion galvanic cell is formed due to the different potential of the electrodes. The metal with negative potential is anode, which leads to anodic reaction and accelerated corrosion process. As shown in the figure below, when galvanic corrosion occurs, the metal with negative electrode potential usually accelerates the corrosion, while the metal with positive electrode potential slows down the corrosion.
